TO OUR COMMUNITY:
The landscape of scientific publishing is evolving rapidly.1 Increased internet access, open-access publications, free statistical platforms, advances in molecular techniques, and machine learning have all contributed to increased scientific output. Not all publications undergo a strict editorial process, and research quality is not always guaranteed. Advances in digital science dissemination, including social media, increase the demand for methodological rigor and standardized, ethical practices in editorial processes.2 The globalization of scientific communications requires journals to adapt to remain relevant, visible, and impactful continuously. As the official journal of the Mexican Society of Nutrition and Endocrinology (SMNE), the Revista Mexicana de Endocrinología, Metabolismo & Nutrición (RMEMN) needs to embrace these changes to become a trusted platform for high-quality endocrine, metabolic, and nutrition research.
For many years, RMEMN has relied on the commitment of authors, reviewers, editors, and readers to educate healthcare professionals and advance our specialties. We are deeply grateful to all those who have supported this mission.
We aspire to increase the international visibility of the research published in our journal, attract a broader range of contributors, and achieve greater scientific impact. To do so, we must align our editorial practices with the standards of leading international journals.
One of the most important steps in this process will be the transition toward publishing exclusively in English. English is currently the universal language of scientific communication. It allows scientific findings to reach a global audience and facilitates their incorporation into international academic discourse. Publishing in English increases accessibility, discoverability, and citation potential.3 This has led editors in non-native English-speaking countries, including Latin America, to encourage submissions in English. A study suggests that articles published in Spanish are cited less often than those in English (
The transition that the RMEMN intends also aims to continue our commitment to the Spanish-speaking scientific community. We seek to ensure that valuable research from our region receives international attention and recognition. Current studies suggest that Hispanic Latin American countries publish only 20% as many publications as English-speaking researchers (p < 0.001). However, the number of publications per year is increasing.4
Introducing English as the language of publication will be accompanied by efforts to strengthen the journal’s editorial standards. This includes increasing methodological rigor, reinforcing adherence to international reporting guidelines, promoting transparency and research integrity, and enhancing the peer-review process. SMNE has played a pivotal role in encouraging the publication of studies with strong scientific merit through research grants and science diffusion. These shared efforts to raise scientific standards in our community aim to reflect the excellence of endocrinology, metabolism, and nutrition in our region.
Change is ongoing and central to science. With community support, RMEMN will strengthen its reputation for #CienciaDeCalidad (#QualityScience).
We thank you for your continued trust, collaboration, and commitment to advancing science.
